Course Description

This introductory course on basic temperature instrumentation process measurement will provide students with a review of temperature measurement and control for temperature processes including symbols, terminology’s and technologies needed to work in the field.  Understanding a temperature loop and P&ID and basic wiring techniques will be covered along with how instruments communicate.  Students will be exposed to hands-on training utilizing a thermocouple, RTD and a temperature transmitter supporting the HART communication protocol.  The class will be a combination of classroom and hands-on training utilizing the ATN Instrumentation Mobile Training Unit with a working process with on-line instrumentation and controls. The transmitters included in the MTU are all Endress Hauser and HART compatible.  Other temperature transmitters can be exchanged if provided by the customer.  

This course requires a prerequisite:  Introduction to Instrumentation.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the different methods of operation of temperature measurement devices and their characteristics.
  2. Install, setup and check temperature loops per a P&ID.
  3. Be familiar with the basic principles of operation of thermocouples and RTD’s.
  4. Different types of thermowells and their application will be discussed.
  5. Be familiar with Hart 475 Communicator to configure an Endress Hauser Temperature Transmitter.
  6. Be familiar with Temperature Calibrators.
