September 13, 2010 - September 15, 2010 Introduction to Design of Experiments

This class is part of the Alabama Suppliers Initiative for Quality.  The I.Q. program provides quality training classes for existing and potential auto suppliers in Workforce Development Region 2 at no cost through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development.  The classes are designed for companies interested in becoming automotive suppliers, as well as those currently supplying the industry but need additional quality training.

In today’s world of manufacturing, organizations are constantly faced with the continual improvement of their key processes.  Process knowledge and experience play critical roles in the continual improvement of a process. However, Design of Experiments (DOE) can be used to move the understanding of your processes to the next level.  Process owners can better understand which characteristics are important and how much they actually affect your processes. This can lead to improvements in existing processes and faster, more efficient development of new processes.  This Introduction to Design of Experiments class teaches the attendees how to gain information about your processes by using simplified Design of Experiments.  This class introduces the use of plots, graphs, and simple calculations (without the emphasis on statistics) to understand the variables that effect and control your processes.  Screening experiments using Full and Fractional Factorial experiments are the focus of this class.  Process capability and process control are also reviewed so the attendee has an understanding of a process that is in the state of statistical control.

Key Topics:

  • Reviews of Problem Solving Tools & Understanding Process Capability
  • Using Factorial Experiments
  • Plotting and analyzing Main and Interaction Effects
  • Using Normal Probability Charts to establish significant factors
  • Using Fractional Factorial Experiments
  • Blocking & Design Resolution of Experiments
  • Fractional Factorial Tables
  • Introduction to Statistical Software (Minitab, Statgraphics, etc.)

Who Should Attend:

  • Managers & Technicians who is responsible for the performance of key processes
  • Professionals or analysts that are responsible for testing or experimenting on systems or processes
  • Engineers who have responsibilities in developing new processes or improving existing production or manufacturing processes
  • Automotive suppliers who need a basic understanding of DOE to satisfy industry requirements

For more information about the I.Q. Program, contact Jada Freeman at jfreeman@atn.org.

October 4, 2010 Problem Solving

The 8 Step Problem Solving Process Training Sessionconsists of the following 3 subjects:

1. 8 Step- Problem Solving – 8 Steps Problem solving that gives team members a systematic approach to “thinking” that follows the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) Management System. This process lays the foundation for all team members to look at problems in the same context giving the team member concrete actions to implement using their values. The 8 step approach is important to understand as the foundation for the Lean journey and essential for team member development which leads to a Lean Culture.

2. A3 Writing / Problem Solving Theme Reports – provides the team member with tools to create a summarized document of their problem, proposal or status report in order to share the “need to know” information about their report to others involved. We consider it the “lean approach” to communication, saving time in reading a multi-page report versus a one page document. The report format we provide will follow the 8 step problem solving approach and provide a roadmap for coaching a development as participants practice and learn the 8 step process.

3. Values and Culture – discusses the values that a company, along with its team members, should understand during their daily work activities and interactions. These values and beliefs are centered on Continuous Improvement philosophies (Kaizen) and Respect for People. We will also introduce ten “tangible actions” in order to “put to life” the values, as well as focusing the team member on “value added” activities that give the team member a “line of sight” to the company Hoshin (Business Plan) or KPI (Key performance indicators) goals.
